Cutler Majestic Theatre Emerson
College Boston, Massachusetts
Emerson College acquired the theater in 1983 and since
then has successfully returned the theater to its original beaux-arts
splendor, of
presenting quality live performances to the public. This award winning project
included upgrading the Majestic Theatre to current building code, ADA
accessibility and current theatre system requirements. The balcony was reopened to the
public for the first time in 30 years, expanding the house seating
capacity from 980 to 1,200 and the existing (non-original) seats were
replaced with new seating, replicating the original seating design.

Tufte Center for Performance and
Production Emerson College Boston,
Massachusetts
Elkus Manfredi planned and designed Emerson College’s
first new building. The 78,000 square foot, 11-story performance and
production center was designed to bring together the college’s theater and
broadcasting departments. The building houses a 210-seat thrust stage
theatre, a 130-seat end stage theatre, two television studios, a two-level
art gallery, stage set and costume design studios, lecture rooms and
faculty offices. The building is completely wired for cable television and
data servicing the campus cable system. The project was constructed in
conjunction with the renovation of the adjacent Majestic Theatre, a
project also designed by Elkus Manfredi. Combined, the two projects
provide the college and the city with a state-of-the-art center for live
performance, broadcast and video production education. |

Courthouse Station Boston, Massachusetts
The ambition and vision of the station’s design reflect the ambition and vision of the Seaport itself. Originally located to provide bus service to the federal courthouse on Boston Harbor, the station's site was subsequently moved to provide fuller public access to the entire district. In its new centralized position, Courthouse Station will serve as a major public connector, a great underground portal to the Seaport and a key catalyst in unleashing the enormous development potential of this latest chapter in Boston's growth. Elkus Manfredi created not simply a place to pass through, but a destination in itself. The concourse - an hourglass-shaped steel bridge - is suspended over the bus platform level in the 40 x 300 foot underground stainless steel “great room.” |

The central element of the project is a new six-story dormitory building with 141 apartments plus 190 below-grade parking spaces on three levels. Ten carefully placed wood-frame housing structures, scaled to the neighborhood surroundings, ease the transition from the residential to campus. |

Trim Dining Hall Babson College
Wellesley, Massachusetts
The goal of this dining hall renovation was to create an upbeat environment emphasizing freshly prepared food and multiple choices for a variety of diets. Working with the school’s planning office and food service provider, Elkus Manfredi’s design responds to the progressive expectations in campus dining. An “individual storefront” concept was developed to accommodate the single-user kitchen and to specify the service locations for various foods. This concept diminished the traditional slow-moving single cafeteria serving line. Emphasis was placed on creating a flexible restaurant environment in terms of food selection, seating, and future changes in dining activities.
