Principal

Howard Elkus has a distinguished career as an urban designer and architect. Over the last 17 years he has led design teams for a variety of clients and building types, including: 33 Arch Street, a new office tower in Boston’s Financial District; the new InterContinental Hotel and Residences overlooking Boston Harbor; the Peninsula Chicago Hotel and retail block at 730 North Michigan Avenue; Seattle’s Pacific Place (with NBBJ); The Paramount residential tower in San Francisco, overlooking Yerba Buena Gardens; the comprehensive renovation of  28 State Street in Boston; and master planning studies for The McCourt Company properties on the South Boston waterfront; mixed-use developments for The Palladium Company including City Place in West Palm Beach; and The Shops at Columbus Circle, the retail podium of Time Warner Center (with SOM) in New York City.

Prior to co-founding Elkus Manfredi Architects in 1988, Mr. Elkus was a principal at The Architects Collaborative (TAC) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His projects at TAC included Boston’s Copley Place and The Heritage on the Garden mixed-use developments; large-scale urban developments on the waterfronts of Redwood City, California; Manila, Philippines; Jaz Valley, Yugoslavia; Santiago, Chile; the master plan of Stanford University’s 41-acre Near West Campus; and such prominent buildings as Harvard University’s Taubman Building at The Kennedy School of Government, and the headquarters of The American Institute of Architects in Washington D.C.

Mr. Elkus holds a Master of Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for projects on which he led the design team including three Urban Land Institute Awards of Excellence, Best New Construction in Harmony with the Built Environment, Building of the Year, numerous American Institute of Architects Awards, the White House Citation for Contribution to Energy Efficient Environment, and Achievement of Significance to the Construction Industry.
